What's New On Campus: May and June

By student blogger Morgan:

At first I honestly did not even realize that I skipped an entire block of updates when I sat down to write this one...Wines class will do that to you. But more on that later! Here's what's been going on at our NY CIA campus for the passed SIX weeks since I was lost in wine country...

1. Rec center construction update: commin' along!

This is a picture of the front of the new addition to the existing building. Eventually this part will be the open air market and campus brewery. And in other exciting news, the NEW GYM areas in the Rec Center have opened! Talk about an upgrade—I haven't talked to any gym regular that isn't psyched about this change. Here's a look into the new all-purpose room where we have spin, zumba, yoga and pilates classes. This room also leads through to a brand new weight room that is at least quadruple the size of the old one, and home to many new state of the art free weights and machines.

2. Campus garden is a growin'

Last year I posted about the various greens, herbs and vegetables that we grow here on campus, and this year there is even more! The usual spots by Colavita Center and the Plaza Cafe are still here, as well as a brand new 'beverage garden' outside of the Marriott Pavilion. The hope is that eventually plants grown here will be used to make beverages in the on campus brewery.

3. Special Projects Day (SPD) last block, focusing on the front of the house. Students were able to attend seminars, tastings and demonstrations on service style and beverages.

4. A special (free!) pre-viewing of the movie Chef, starring Jon Favreau and Sophia Vergara.

The movie depicts an LA Chef who goes out on a limb to create a food truck featuring Cuban sandwiches after feeling creatively drained by his restaurant job. Jon Favreau trained for six months with CIA alum Roy Choi before shooting the movie, to learn the ways of a kitchen from a chef with a similar career path as the movie character. To show his thanks, Favreau gave an early copy of the movie to all of our CIA campuses to view. Here he is visiting with our students of the CIA California campus, who held a special event at the Google campus to welcome him:

5. On top of all that we had a few special campus events including a chocolate tasting by Guittard Chocolates, the Marriot Pavilion dedication ceremony, a health and wellness fair, and three separate lectures from industry professionals on the future of our food system and jobs in the industry.

You miss three weeks here, you miss a LOT. And we're just getting started around here as most colleges are well into summer vacation. It's going to be a summer full of fun events and special speakers so stay tuned!
